Ástor Pantaleón Piazzolla (March 11, 1921 – July 4, 1992) was an Argentine tango composer and bandoneón player. His oeuvre revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style termed nuevo tango, incorporating elements from jazz and classical music. A virtuoso bandoneónist, he regularly performed his own compositions with different ensembles.
Piazzolla's revolutionary style, in which he fused traditional tango with elements of jazz, saw him create a variety of atmosphere enhancing songs that are regularly favoured by music supervisors. Highlights of this selection include "Oblivion", which has been the subject of numerous sync requests throughout the world, and "Suite Punta Del Esta", on which the theme to the 1995 Terry Gilliam film "12 Monkeys" was based.
